Why is vertebral pneumaticity in sauropod dinosaurs so variable?

چکیده
The vertebrae of sauropod dinosaurs have distinctive and complex pneumatic features including fossae foramina in the sides their centra. These vary between individuals, serially within even left right single vertebrae. This presents a conundrum because bone is usually least variable material vertebrate body. Blood vessels, however, are much more labile, as can be seen varied occurrence vascular not only sauropods, but also birds, crocodilians mammals. Vascular variation arises part from ontogeny vertebrae, which embryonic state vascularised neural canal: hand-off these vessels to others penetrate outside always completed. In pneumatizing diverticula enter alongside blood that they form, before excavating surrounding into larger foramina. We propose same was true vascularization directly caused pneumatization. most foramen carries both artery vein, occasionally separate each forms foramen. explains why rare cases individual two cavities on side: formed by either or vein.

Vertebral pneumaticity, air sacs, and the physiology of sauropod dinosaurs
—The vertebrae of sauropod dinosaurs are characterized by complex architecture involving laminae, fossae, and internal chambers of various shapes and sizes. These structures are interpreted as osteological correlates of a system of air sacs and pneumatic diverticula similar to that of birds. In extant birds, diverticula of the cervical air sacs pneumatize the cervical and anterior thoracic vert...
متن کاملCaudal Pneumaticity and Pneumatic Hiatuses in the Sauropod Dinosaurs Giraffatitan and Apatosaurus
Skeletal pneumaticity is found in the presacral vertebrae of most sauropod dinosaurs, but pneumaticity is much less common in the vertebrae of the tail. We describe previously unrecognized pneumatic fossae in the mid-caudal vertebrae of specimens of Giraffatitan and Apatosaurus. In both taxa, the most distal pneumatic vertebrae are separated from other pneumatic vertebrae by sequences of three ...
متن کاملOrigin of postcranial skeletal pneumaticity in dinosaurs.
The sauropodomorph Thecodontosaurus caducus and theropod Coelophysis bauri are the earliest known dinosaurs with postcranial skeletal pneumaticity. In both taxa, postcranial pneumatic features are confined to the cervical vertebrae. This distribution of pneumaticity in the skeleton is most consistent with pneumatization by diverticula of cervical air sacs similar to those of birds. Other hypoth...

Vertebral laminae connect various projections on the neural arch (costovertebral and intervertebral articulations, neural spine) and centrum of the presacral, sacral, and anterior caudal vertebrae of sauropods and other saurischian dinosaurs. The nomenclature applied to vertebral laminae is based on the landmarks they connect. Along the vertebral series and especially through regional transitio...
متن کاملO10: Why Preschool Education Programs Is So Important
Neurological development is largely a result of the learning that takes place starting at birth and during the earliest years of life. Child Care and Preschool Education Programs are key to predicting ultimate success in school and life. Children who attend preschool or other early education programs have enhanced cognitive, verbal, and social development (which is maintained into the first few...
